Marriage Proposal Stories

Trick or Treat?

It was one evening in November of 2002 when I asked my girlfriend of four years to marry me. The prior few days I had spent discretely sourcing the perfect engagement ring for Sheryl which after a few days of looking, I had found.

I remember wanting a really neat way to propose, but understandably didn't want to make things too obvious. In my mind, I believed that a romantic dinner may very well give away the surprise. In those days a night out for us was rare and a date invitation on this particular weekday evening, may have surely made things a little suspicious.

It was shortly after Halloween and the routine ritual for Sheryl was to snack on the leftover candy that everyone always seems to have after the occasion. Upon some thought I realized that I could somehow take advantage of this predictable after dinner ritual and hide the engagement ring in the bowl of candies!

The afternoon I picked up her ring I remember taking an extended lunch break from work so that I could make it home at a time when Sheryl would still be at her job. Confident of her response to my proposal, I stopped at the local liquor store and selected a fine bottle of champagne to go with the occasion. Upon my arrival at home I first hid the champagne in the basement refrigerator, then made my way into the cupboard for the bowl of candies. After carefully opening a box of Reese Pieces (her favorite) I placed the ring inside then re-sealed the box by heating the adhesive and pressing it closed. It was perfect! She would have no idea that the package had been tampered with. Upon placing the box of Reese Pieces neatly back in the bowl, I made sure to rid the contents of any remaining packages of Reese Pieces. This way I'd be sure, if Sheryl was as predictable as I felt she'd be, that the last remaining box of her favorite candy would surely be too tempting to pass up - especially with her knowing that I too had a sweet tooth and was quite fond of those colorful peanut butter flavored candies.

Making my way back into work I waited anxiously for the evening.

Sure enough, after a nice home cooked dinner Sheryl did what I knew she'd do. She made way with the after supper cleanup then headed for the bowl of candies. I was shaking with anticipation! It only took a second. The first reach into the bowl had netted her the prize box. As she began to open the package I started to tell Sheryl "how much I loved her" and continued to mutter words of reassurance that she was the only one for me. I recall her looking at me foolishly as she nibbled on her treats, most certainly thinking, "what the heck is he doing? Has he done something wrong?". Eventually, staring down into the box, Sheryl discovered the ring and was indeed very surprised. She had responded with a warm "Yes" and we rejoiced over a cold bottle of champagne.
